Mombasa Day Trip: Tsavo East National Park

Early Morning:

05:00 AM | Pick-Up & Departure to Tsavo East National Park

You will be picked up early from your hotel or residence within Mombasa and begin your journey toward one of Kenya’s largest and oldest national parks. The sunrise drive offers beautiful views of the African countryside as the wilderness slowly comes to life. You will arrive in Tsavo East national park at around 08:00 AM, which is a good time for wildlife viewing because most animals are more active in the morning cold temperatures.

What you will experience:

  • An early departure to maximize wildlife viewing
  • Entry into the vast, open savannah landscapes of Tsavo East
  • A morning game drive during peak predator activity
  • Sightings of the famous “red elephants” (colored by Tsavo’s red soil), lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and antelopes
  • Expansive plains dotted with baobab trees and acacia woodlands
  • Incredible sunrise photography opportunities

The early hours provide the best chance to spot big cats before the day heats up.

Mid-Morning:

11:00 AM | Aruba Dam

You will visit Aruba Dam, a man-made water reservoir built along the Voi River. It is located in the Southern section of Tsavo East National Park and it’s one of the park’s prime wildlife concentration areas.

What you will experience:

  • Large herds of elephants and buffalo gathering to drink
  • Possible sightings of lions or leopards nearby
  • Hippos and crocodiles along the water’s edge
  • A perfect photography stop with wildlife reflections in the water
  • Scenic views across the open plains

This is one of the best spots in the park to observe animals interacting around a water source.

Afternoon:

12:30 PM | Galana River

You will head toward the Galana River, one of Kenya’s major rivers, which flows through the heart of Tsavo’s wilderness. The Galana River, also known as the Athi-Galana-Sabaki River in its different sections, is located in southeastern Kenya, flowing from the central highlands to the Indian Ocean. It forms in Tsavo East National Park, flows through Kilifi County, and enters the Indian Ocean just north of Malindi.

What you will experience:

  • Stunning river scenery cutting through the red-earth landscape
  • Views of crocodiles basking on the riverbanks and hippos in the water
  • Lunch at a safari lodge overlooking the river or nearby plains
  • Time to relax and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature
  • An afternoon game drive exploring different sections of the park

The afternoon drive offers chances to spot additional wildlife as animals move toward water sources again before sunset.

5:00 PM | Return

You will exit the park and begin your journey back to your hotel or residence, arriving in the early evening.

This full-day safari offers an authentic wilderness experience — vast landscapes, iconic wildlife, and unforgettable moments in Kenya’s legendary Tsavo ecosystem.
